Extending Lifesaving Healthcare to Rural Communities in Iganga District
๐ฅ Project Overview
In 2018, Nabilala Community Development Programme (Nabilala CDP) expanded its healthcare initiatives by constructing the Namunkanaga Children Health Centre in Namungare Sub County, Iganga District. This facility was established to address the pressing need for accessible pediatric healthcare in a region where the nearest medical services were previously over 10 kilometers away.

๐ Community Need
Residents of Namunkanaga Parish faced significant challenges in accessing timely medical care for their children, leading to preventable illnesses and fatalities. The establishment of a local health center aimed to:
- Provide accessible and affordable healthcare for children under 18 years.
- Reduce child mortality and morbidity rates.
- Offer early diagnosis and treatment for common illnesses such as malaria, diarrhea, and respiratory infections.
- Serve as a referral center for more complex medical conditions.
- Deliver community health education to caregivers and adolescents.
๐งฑ Implementation and Support
The construction of the Namunkanaga Children Health Centre was made possible through the generous support of the Kitchen Table Charities Trust (KTCT), a UK-based organization that funds small-scale, community-led projects in developing countries. KTCT’s contribution was instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.
Additionally, the community played a pivotal role in engagement and support. Their initiatives, such as the community consultation and thanksgiving prayer in Namunkanaga-Kigulu village, have fostered unity and collaboration among residents, further strengthening the impact of the health center.
๐ Impact
Since its inauguration, the Namunkanaga Children Health Centre has:
- Treated over 1,200 children from Namunkanaga and neighboring villages.
- Enabled faster response to medical emergencies.
- Reduced the travel burden on caregivers seeking medical attention for their children.
- Become a hub for community health awareness, including hygiene and nutrition campaigns.
In early 2020, the center expanded its services to offer limited maternal care, particularly antenatal services and referrals, addressing the broader healthcare needs of the community.
