🏥 Background
In 2016, Nabilala Community Development Programme (Nabilala CDP) launched the Nabilala Children Health Center, a pivotal initiative aimed at addressing the lack of accessible healthcare for children in the rural areas of Namutumba District, Uganda.

Before the health center was established, the nearest public hospital was located over 15 kilometers away in Bugiri town. Poor road infrastructure and limited transportation options meant that many children suffering from treatable illnesses were not able to access timely medical care—resulting in preventable deaths and long-term health complications.
This project was created to ensure that no child should have to die due to the absence of a nearby health facility.
🎯 Project Goals
- Provide accessible, affordable healthcare for children under 18 years
- Reduce child mortality and morbidity in the surrounding communities
- Offer early diagnosis and treatment for common illnesses such as malaria, diarrhea, and respiratory infections
- Serve as a referral center for more complex medical conditions
- Expand health education for parents and caregivers on preventive care, sanitation, and nutrition
🤝 Partnerships and Support
The successful implementation of the Nabilala Children Health Center in 2016 was made possible through strong international and local collaboration.
- Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kampala: The Dutch Embassy provided critical financial support for the construction of the health center. As part of its broader commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare in Uganda, the Embassy’s contribution enabled Nabilala CDP to establish a permanent, community-run health facility in the heart of Bulange, Namutumba district.
- Universal Charitable Fund (UCF): UCF supported the center with essential hospital beds and furnishings, equipping the facility to serve pediatric patients and expectant mothers more effectively.
These partnerships reflect a shared vision for accessible, community-based healthcare, and continue to inspire further development across the region.
Together, these partners helped turn a community’s dream into a reality.
🏗️ Implementation
The health center was constructed on community-donated land, with local labor contributing to the building process. Nabilala CDP coordinated the project from start to finish, ensuring alignment with Uganda’s Ministry of Health standards.
Facility features include:
- Consultation and treatment rooms
- Pediatric beds
- Diagnostic equipment
- Maternal care wing (added later as demand grew)
- Community health education sessions
🌟 Impact
Since opening its doors, the Nabilala Children Health Center has served hundreds of children annually, with far-reaching impact across the region:
- ✅ Significant drop in child mortality due to earlier intervention
- ✅ Increased community trust in local health services
- ✅ Enhanced health knowledge among parents and caregivers
- ✅ Ongoing support for maternal and newborn care
What began as a small pediatric clinic has now evolved into a vital health resource for entire families, particularly women and children.
💬 What’s Next?
This project inspired new efforts in maternal health, HIV awareness, adolescent reproductive health, and mobile clinics. With continued support, we plan to expand services and renovate parts of the center to meet increasing demand.
